Not long ago, Noel and I flew to Washington D.C. in a whirlwind to attend the 2024 Jackson Wild  media awards ceremony, and present a Lifetime Achievement Award to the legendary impact filmmaker and conservationist Mike Pandey.

Having dedicated his career to specialising in films about wildlife and the environment - his living legacy continues through his son Gautam Pandey (National Award Winning Wildlife Filmmaker) and daughter-in-law Doel Trivedy (Award Winning Director and Producer, National Geographic Explorer and founder of Green Stories) who are carving pathways in their own right.

When we were asked to serve as mentors and advisors to Green Stories, it wasn’t even a question—we knew we had to be involved. From the moment we first met Doel and Gautam during an impromptu happy hour chat in Bristol, a collaboration was sparked—one that embodies support, community, and family.

It is no surprise that, five years after hosting a panel at Congress titled 'Focus on India: Forging New Partnerships' and mentoring numerous NEWF labs alongside them, we can now show our continued support for this trailblazing industry event platform dedicated to fostering intentional support and community for natural history and environmental storytellers in  India, South Asia and Southeast Asian countries.

Meeting the filmmakers, witnessing the mentoring process, and observing the pitches left us in awe of the talent and the fresh, powerful stories being shared. As you will learn from Rufusiah’s brief insight into her experience as an observer, the resonance of shared experiences in these narratives define the connections between our continents—connections with threads more tightly woven through than we might think.

As we continue our storytelling and access work into 2025, we are thrilled to welcome Green Stories filmmakers into our community to further explore how nature, the environment and wildlife connect us - starting with #NEWF2025, which we can’t wait to share more about!

Are you ready to #ChangeTheNarrative?

Since November has been an organic celebration of Ubuntu across continents, countries and storytelling niches... we're celebrating the power of tangible community, passionate representation and vibrant storytelling as we prepare to close another year of collectively #ChangingTheNarrative!

eKhaya turned ONE!

Last year we shared a story that started with how our mission has always been to create strong communities for storytellers, conservationists, and scientists to help each other grow and take up space. In just one year, eKhaya has evolved into a space to gather, grow, learn, challenge, train, eat and rest in community. Created as to be a home base, #ChangingTheNarrative manifests as African storytellers, scientists, researchers, ocean explorers and conservationists filled its space with perspectives, ideas and dreams more diverse than our community of more than 250 fellows.

Since the initial phases of development, our administrative offices and a dedicated dive space for kit and comfort. Building on the comfort and inclusivity of our homebase; we recently added an accessibility ramp for wheelchairs, as well as a boma as an extension of the storytelling that takes place around the fire.

NEWF x AFRIFF13 Pitch

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) celebrated its 13th edition from 3 to 9 November 2024 in Lagos, Nigeria, with the theme ‘Indigenous to Global: Cultural Wealth to Global Prosperity.’

This year saw NEWF’s partnership with AFRIFF expand as the pitch competition grew from a regional focus to a continent-wide call, drawing 80 applications. After a rigorous review, three (3) finalists were announced and  will advance to the 2025 NEWF Producers’ Lab, continuing the festival’s legacy of nurturing talent.

Green Stories

Asia’s first mentoring and pitching lab for wildlife and environment documentaries, Green Stories was especially exciting for Filmmaker and NEWF Fellow Rufusiah Molefe from Botswana. Attending as an observer, we have the privilege of seeing Green Stories through the eyes of a fellow who returned home inspired to write with brand new perspective.

‘Green Stories has introduced me to the diverse storytelling landscape of Asia and I’ve realised that the human connection to nature is a universal, human experience, and a very complex one regardless of whether it is in Africa, Asia or anywhere else in the world.

My time at Green Stories has solidified the urgency of storytelling as a powerful tool to tell human, wildlife and nature stories - with the influence of local voices and local talent.’

Rustenburg Film Festival

RFF brought filmmakers together and got audiences buzzing with excitement in the heart of the North West province. From beginner basics to advanced masterclasses, the workshops and screenings explored the film industry through local and global lenses.

At the NEWF Embedded session, Sewela Mutileni and Nkosi Mthembu lit up the room with their insights on NEWF's work refocusing the narrative in African nature and environmental storytelling, while visitors were invited to glimpse into some of our favourite nature experiences in VR.

Africa to Archipelago

In August we welcomed the team and collaborators from the Africa to Archipelago project to eKhaya for the first of many cultural exchanges.

Africa to Archipelago is a conservation-focused initiative, anchored in music, nature, and cross-border community. The initiative brings together a collective of indigenous musicians and creatives from Africa and the Philippines to co-create stories, soundtracks, and immersive content – elevating underrepresented indigenous voices and increasing the publicʼs affinity with nature.

After a whirlwind of brand and activation development by the talented Love Frankie team based in Bangkok - the NEWF were warmly welcomed to the Philippines to immerse in the local culture at the heart of this multi-cultural sonic journey.

sea of change!

While NEWF facilitates the largest ocean access program for African Scientists, Conservationists and Storytellers; only a fraction of the Dive Lab fellows go on to be supported for professional opportunities like the Divemaster and Instructor training programs. Our goal to redefine ocean access in the professional dive industry is one we invest in, with sustainability and community at the heart of our eligibility criteria.

Mere days ago, we celebrated only the second and third instructor certifications - George Amado from Ghana, and Mbonea Mdoe from Tanzania - and NEWF Dive Fellow Husna Amimu qualified as an Assistant Instructor. Each with a passionate goal to stimulate new industries back home, we look forward to delving more deeply into their 'why' and the milestones that will follow these first certification milestones in their instructor training programs.
