Senna’s first World Championship win

By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

The 1988 Japanese Grand Prix, held on this day at the Suzuka circuit, was a pivotal race in F1 history. Ayrton Senna won, securing his first World Drivers’ Championship title.

The event, on Honda’s home circuit, was significant as it showcased the fierce rivalry between Senna and his McLaren-Honda teammate Alain Prost.

Senna won the pole in qualifying with Prost alongside. It was the Frenchman who led away while Senna stalled on the grid. However, Suzuka has a sloping grid and so the Brazilian was able to bump start his car.

He had dropped to 14th place, but immediately made a charge through the field, gaining six places by the end of the first lap and running in fourth on lap 4.

As the race progressed, Senna caught Prost who was coping with a gearbox problem. At the chequered flag, Senna had a 13 second lead. Thierry Boutsen took third place in his Benetton Ford, with Gerhard Berger (Ferrari) fourth, Alessandro Nannini (Benetton) fifth and Ricardo Patrese (Williams) in sixth.

Victory in Japan was also Senna's eighth win of the season, which beat the record for total wins in a single season, previously held by Jim Clark (1963) and Prost (1984)
