TRAIL Mail #20: Friday 20 September 2019

It's Friday! And three-quarters through September... Where has 2019 gone?! Are you living your dream?

It's Time For Karkloof Kiffness

Best of luck to everyone running Karkloof100 (172 entries!) and Karkloof50 (99 entries) this weekend!

When you finish the 100 miler (because that's what you're gonna do, right?), you get the silver buckle pictured above – if you dip under 24 hours. The cut-off for the equally impressive bronze Karkloof100 buckle is 36 hours.

Be assured that your run, whether 50 or 100 miles, will reveal to you many things about yourself. The good, the bad, the ugly. Ultras do that. Embrace the highs and lows. They're all part of the journey. Where there's light, there is going to be some shadow. Vasbyt! You can do this!

I entered the 100 miler, but life intervened, and I've 'downgraded' to the 80km. Ha! It's all relative, right? Now that the left foot's plantar niggle has become quiet, it's been replaced by a sharp pain along my second toe's phalanges. (Reminder to self – and you - final week phantom pains are part of the journey too.)

See you at registration for both races in Howick later today, starting at 3pm. If you're running, drop by to get your free back copy of TRAIL, especially if you've missed earlier issues.

Happy trails!

1. NEWS

INTERNATIONAL

Megan Mackenzie returns to Scotland for the Ring of Steall this weekend. Last year she placed 14th in the 29km race through the Scottish highlands. Best of luck to Meg in the penultimate Golden Trail Series race. If she keeps her position in the top 10, she will join other elites at the Annapurna Marathon final. Meg is currently ranked sixth based on her performances at Mont Blanc Marathon, Dolomyths Skyrace, and Pikes Peak Marathon this year.

Willie Richards of Bloubergstrand has biked to halfway and is now running 750km back to Cape Town to highlight the plight of township cats and dogs in the Western Cape, and to raise funds for mass sterilisation through African Tails.
