Care and support are key to uplifting Alex

You may be familiar with Rays of Hope’s goal of ‘bringing lasting change’ to the residents of Alexandra Township. Lasting change speaks to making a real impact in peoples’ lives that’s not only helpful in the now, but sustainable in the future.

This means that, in addition to the many programmes that Rays of Hope facilitates – including giving Gogo Mthalo a place she can truly call home or providing meals and groceries to the hungry – programmes like the Young Moms’ Support Group contribute towards a better future for the youth and generations to come. Breaking the cycles of poverty, violence, abandonment and child abuse starts with nurturing the next generation of mothers through education and emotional support.

This of course is just one of the initiatives run by Rays of Hope, which needs qualified staff and relevant resources to operate successfully. It’s for this and so many other reasons that we value our partners and their ongoing donations so much. These donations enable us to facilitate various programmes at the same time, impacting the lives of over 2,800 people!

We would really appreciate your support for these programmes by buying a special Rays of Hope desk calendar to beautify your work (or work-from-home) space – and make a difference while you’re at it, as all proceeds received go straight back into funding all our community programmes.

Remember that all donations to Rays of Hope be eligible for BBBEE points and a Section 18A certificate will be issued for cash donations.

Help us in our mission to bring lasting change to the beautiful, vibrant community of Alex.

Warm regards,
Sihle Mooi
CEO at Rays of Hope

The future is bright for young mums in Alex

For Awomgile Mngcobo, a 21-year-old mother, the journey of motherhood with her nine-month-old began with many challenges. Along with the struggle of providing for her child, Awongile also had the judgement of others to contend with.

“In my community and in black society, people make you feel like you must be ashamed and that you should have never done this to yourself,” she says. “But through Rays of Hope I realised that I am actually so proud of the mum I am.”

Giving Gogo Mthalo a place to call home

Gogo Mthalo and the five children that she looks after faced many cold and frightening nights in their dwelling made from corrugated sheeting, wood, cardboard and plastic, literally held together with string and wire. Not only were they exposed to the elements, but electrical cables dangling over a flimsy roof above their heads were an accident waiting to happen.

Rays of Hope’s social workers knew they needed to help Gogo Mthalo. Using the funds raised from Rays of Hope’s recent Little x Little campaign on GlobalGiving as well as donations from other generous souls, Gogo’s new home took just five days to be completed – just in time for the rainy season.

DiscoveryCare’s support helps us give more Alex residents a reason to keep dreaming

Rays of Hope’s ability to impact the lives of thousands of disadvantaged Alexandra Township residents wouldn’t be possible without our staff's dedication, our exceptional volunteers, and support from organisations like DiscoveryCare, one of our 2021 corporate sponsors.
