John Love wins Hesketh race of attrition

By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

On this day in 1966, John Love won the two-heat Pat Fairfield Trophy race at the Roy Hesketh circuit in his Cooper T79 Climax. This was the tenth round of the SA Championship series and it did not get off to a good start.

A litany of mechanical mishaps and breakdowns took their toll on the machinery even before practice was completed. Love’s engine was bellowing oil from a broken piston ring and Sam Tingle's Climax engine in this LDS developed an oil leak.

Doug Serrurier had an accident and damaged his LDS Climax, which was fortunately repairable.

Tingle managed to claim pole position, but completed just three laps of the first heat before his engine blew up comprehensively.

Love won both heats and once the finishing positions were aggregated, he was found to have won comfortably from Clive Puzey’s Lotus Climax and Serurier’s LDS.

Leo Dave in the ex-Peter de Klerk Alfa Special and Tony Jefferies in the ex Love Cooper T55 Climax were the last of the finishers.

Love would again stamp his authority on the SA F1 championship in 1966, winning the title with ease. After finishing sixth in the non-championship South African GP at East London on 1 January, he would go on to win three races at Kyalami, three at Roy Hesketh (including the Pat Fairfield Trophy) and one at Killarney to cap off a successful season.
