The tonic of appreciation

In 2020 and 2021 – the years that changed my life – one thing was engrained in me: that was to appreciate what one had. Whether it is a reliable car, great climate, one’s health, a loving partner, or a satisfied customer. When complacency creeps in and appreciation dissipates – you’re treading on thin ice. And if you are self-employed – the customer is everything.

This past weekend, the South African Springboks beat for the fourth consecutive time, our longtime rivals – the All Blacks. Our nation savored every one of the 80 minutes played.

Because it is now Sunday, and yesterday was another great game of South African rugby – the Springbok is the hero of this AHG Monthly. The impala is featured as well on the current print edition of African Hunting Gazette. Both classic, never-to-be-taken-for-granted animals.

This morning, I got an exuberant message and pictures of Jonathan’s impala and gemsbok. He’s a first-timer to Africa, hunted with Kerneels Viljoen (www.mokanesafaris.co.za) and wanted TTS to take care of mounting and sending them home.

Yesterday, good friend Jon Fossel sent me a picture of the lion he’d just hunted with Derick Van Staden (www.derickvanstadensafaris.com) in Zambia. A monster. At 80-plus years old, Jon was probably as excited as he was the first time he came to Africa, decades back. I don’t know, but perhaps that enthusiasm is one of the secrets to living a long life. One thing is for sure, I should have started a logbook of the clients at Afton – who they were, what we chatted about, be it on their way in or on their way home, just having loved the experience this continent gave, or brimming with enthusiasm at the prospect of what lay ahead.

Of course, there are occasional glitches and it’s sad to see disappointment – worse still when it’s my fault. I really feel for visitors to Africa that have a less-than-incredible experience. By and large, when it comes to surpassing expectations, it is a wonderful position to be part of the African safari industry where one meets and engages with clients from all walks of life who are just loving and appreciating what our continent has on offer.

Talking of what is on offer – this is a cover of a soon-to-go-to-print bowhunting book that a Dawn Member – Strang Middleton of Strang Middleton Safaris – has written. If you’re a bowhunter, this will be for you. Next month, we will have a complete preview.

That’s it for this month. Enjoy your September.

Best wishes,
Richard Lendrum

Target Masailand – A Hunter’s Dream

By Enrich Hugo

A look out of the side window of the Qatar airline’s Boeing Dreamliner lets my anticipation run wild. I look at the highest mountain in Africa. Since we are already on the approach to my destination airport, the bird’s eye view of the Kibo, which is located in the Kilimanjaro massif, is a terrific experience. The destination airport is Kilimanjaro Airport in the East African country of Tanzania. On the coast of the Indian Ocean with around 56 million inhabitants, it is one of the fifth-largest countries in Africa by population. Often described as the cradle of mankind, but for me Tanzania means much more.

The Golden Gemsbok of Ukujabula

By Glenn W. Geelhoed

We were prospecting for gold in Limpopo Province.  It has been done before, but we were on a mission with the target being the golden gemsbok. The goal was a “Crystallized Memory” in honor of the gemsbok, with paired pedestal mount trophies highlighting the two major color phases of the Oryx gazela.

A Safari to Remember

By Bob Halbritter

Dawn arrived with a cold, crisp sting in the air. A heavy frost covered the tall, sweet grass growing in the valleys and on mountain slopes, coating the landscape with an eerie white luminescence. A thin layer of ice formed across waterholes and ponds. I was not expecting such cold temperatures, but then, this is typical of July in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. A windy cold front had passed through during the night, greeting the morning with an abundance of sunshine and little or no wind to start the day. By midmorning temperatures would rise into the 50s. Perfect for stalking our quarry – the Cape buffalo.

Who are the African Dawn Outfitters?

The African Dawn Program is about promoting hunting in Africa, not just through what we publish, but with the outfitters’ cooperation in this program… and it is for your peace of mind.

International travel consumes two precious commodities – personal time and money. And when you are a hunter, things can get tricky when there are further considerations like rules, regulations, details and differences between each country and their species. It is important to have a good outfitter, and whether it is your next hunting safari, or your first one, there are many outfitters to choose from. In fact, there are over 500, so how do you find a reliable one, the one that is right for you?

To help you, we decided to promote and work with approximately 10% of this continent-wide group of outfitters. We have listed a limited number of an esteemed group of established and reputable African outfitters and they can be found in this Catalogue. To familiarize yourself with this list, we also offer monthly publications, and monthly trophy gallery posts (Trophies Fresh from the Veld). To ensure you receive these updates, sign up www.africanhuntinggazette.com.

If you are an agent looking for an outfitter to represent, you’ll be safe contacting one of these outfitters.

If you are researching for your next safari, be sure to contact any one of listed outfitters directly. It will support them and save you money by booking with them. Please tell them that it was by them being an African Dawn Member that contributed to the decision.

Our website www.africanhuntinggazette.com has a detailed overview of them all, and you know where to contact me if you need to know anything more.

For now, just enjoy the read.
