Fish Fraud: Species mislabelling

Fish fraud is a major global issue. The Decernis Food Fraud database currently lists 192 incidents of fish and seafood fraud which have occurred over the last four decades; however, the true extent of fraud in the fish and seafood industry is unknown, as most incidents are unreported. Fortunately the species of a fish sample can be confirmed or identified through DNA or Protein-based testing. The mislabelling of fish species may have significant environmental and safety implications. The responsibility lies with all role players in the fish supply chain to ensure that the species of fish that is caught, sold and consumed is transparent and traceable.

Possible peanut cross-contamination in soy lecithin

Our team communicated an alert with our testing customers on the 22nd of May 2022 with the intention of bringing to our allergen testing clients attention that a report was logged on the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) by Germany in late April (notification 2022:2286) indicating that some soy lecithin supplied from India may be contaminated with peanut. Further on from this notice, recent updates to the RASFF notification, and our own experience, indicate that affected lecithin batches have been distributed to South Africa. If you would like to receive similar alerts and you are not yet subcribed to receive our newsletter, please subscribe now.
