It has been a mostly quiet week on the trail front, but the Western States 100 story published on Tuesday is quite the rewrite of the event's popular founding legend, isn't it? What is your take on it?

And here in sunny SA, what a heartwarming success story Riverside Club is in Durban North.

Check out both stories in News.

2. RACES

The WILDSERIES Three Cranes Challenge from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 March 2022 in the Howick district of KZN is one of South Africa's iconic three-day stage runs. The race slogan is Three Cranes. Three Days. One Adventure! and it certainly delivers on the adventure promise.

It has been enchanting and challenging entrants since 2008 with everything trail runners love: magnificent WILD scenery, a thrilling variety of running terrain to test fitness and skills, meeting new friends, great food, wide open spaces, and crisp fresh air. The forest trails through the beautiful Karkloof Valley are sometimes technical, sometimes fast and runnable, sometimes muddy, but always inspiring.

If you haven't run a stage race before, take your running to the next level with the 27km/39km/31km Challenge, or ease into trail running with single day races of 25km (Saturday) or 5km (Sunday).

Choose from fully catered or run-only (you can arrange your own accommodation and meals for a reduced entry rate).

You'll experience the majestic Grey Mares Tail waterfall, Willies Magical Garden, Mbona Nature Reserve, Benvie Gardens, enjoy the zipline experience of Karkloof Canopy Tour and marvel at towering ancient yellowwood trees.

Your run will benefit our natural heritage: R600 of every Challenge entry goes towards the crane conservation work being done by WILDTRUST, Karkloof Conservancy, and Endangered Wildlife Trust. There is no better way to test your endurance while running for the conservation of the Cranes (Blue, Wattled, and Crowned Cranes).

After your daily adventures, share war stories or just chill with your fellow runners in the comforts of Bushwillow Park, and enjoy delicious food and treats.

Three Cranes are calling you. Will you answer their call?
Visit the race website for more, or fast-track to the entry page.

And while you're dreaming of that cloud forest adventure, be inspired by events in the month ahead on our website calendar.

4. NEWS

So it appears that the history of Western States 100 is due for revision, with this in-depth article by ultrarunninghistory.com which reveals that Gordy Ainsleigh was not the first finisher on foot.

Riverside Club in Durban North held its annual prizegiving and dedicated the run in Virginia Bush Nature Reserve to stalwarts Alison Chadwick and partner Gordie Truluck. It was their last run and the club's farewell to them ahead of their emigration to the UK. They will be sorely missed! Founded in 2010 by Buzz Bolton (centre), he is the firebrand that continues to make Riverside a truly remarkable club (with a lot of help from his Riverside friends of course).

We are family. Riverside Club in Durban North continues to foster a community of people committed to each other and their natural playground.

5. ISSUE 42

What's in the new issue?

How LONG should our LONG RUNS be?

At what point do long runs do more HARM than good?

You'll know the answer to that, PLUS you'll avoid injury and burnout, when you read The Long Run in our latest issue.

Coach Sean Tait does a thorough investigation, distilling the research, correlating it with his real-world observations, and the answer is... (not 42 – sorry Douglas Adams!).

To maximise your long runs, and save yourself unnecessary run time and injuries, don't read The Hitchhiker's Guide or other science fiction, read the article in TRAIL 42.

A South African tackles the 330km Tor des Géants

Tor des Géants is a 330km mountain run considered to be one of the toughest running races in the world. Hilton's Tim Underwood jumped through COVID hoops to participate in the 2021 edition, becoming only the sixth South African to finish. Read the article in TRAIL 42.
