Spiral Horn Dreams…

Without a doubt, our finest contributor, someone whose writing is a sheer delight to read, is Terry Wieland. It is a privilege to publish his work and, with this AHG monthly, it is a treat to be able to rerun work that we published in print, years back. His work is timeless. I hope he keeps writing till he’s 100!

What’s long out of print and a classic, is Terry’s book, Spiral Horn Dreams. You can get it on eBay and places like that for about $400, or more. This collection of nine spiral horns as they are known – sitatunga, bushbuck, nyala, mountain nyala, eland, bongo, Lord Derby eland, lesser kudu and, of course, the greater kudu – has enchanted hunters for decades. And, let me add, there are sub-species that take the group from nine right up into the twenties. There are nine bushbuck subspecies alone! This rarefied collection of every one of these twenty plus animals, is only attainable to the fortunate few. Aside from time and passion, hunters need a healthy bank balance. Of course, everyone needs to start somewhere, and this is where we come in. The chance to win something incredible.  A lucky-subscriber-draw of note!

On June 30th, we are drawing one incredibly lucky name from our list of subscribers. The prize – wait for it – is:

  • A return flight,
  • Meet-and-greet and overnight stay at Afton,
  • Transfer to and from Eland Safaris – a Craig Boddington-Endorsed Outfitter and one of our Dawn members – for a 7-day all-in safari to complete a South African Spiral Horn Slam of eland, bushbuck, kudu and nyala, and
  • Taxidermy (shoulder mounts) and shipping to the port of entry, courtesy of our TTS (Taxidermy & Trophy Solutions)

If that is not a large enough carrot to entice you to sign up as an AHG member, be it for one year (1 entry) or Life Membership (10 entries), I am not sure what is. To stand a chance at this amazing prize, click here to sign up. (Note: Existing Life Members are automatically entered into the draw.)

Anyway, it is May, hunting’s in full swing in Africa and I hope you enjoy the line-up we have below. Always remember, we are doing this for one reason – to promote hunting in Africa.

Regards,
Richard

Epic Wildife Photos: More Photos From Drew Butterwick

By Drew Butterwick

I guess you could pretty much say I’ve spent the majority of my life bouncing around the globe, chasing wildlife. As of 2023, I’ve stamped about 40 countries in my passport, including accumulating nearly two year’s worth of time, on multiple trips, to Africa. I’ve been behind the still camera and video lens for thousands of hours and been incredibly fortunate to witness some of our wildlife’s most amazing feats; some cute, some harsh, some beautiful and others hard to even describe without the images themselves.

A Trifecta of Good Gnus

By Glenn W. Geelhoed

“Most all Gnus are Good Gnus,” we said in the lame abuse of the Ki-Swahili term for the wildebeest. But this term is easier to say than Connochaetes taurinus, the scientific name of the common blue, or brindled wildebeest. These common antelope number in the millions in Africa and have been exported as exotics into other arid parts of the world’s grasslands. Their migration patterns in following the rains and grasses they nourish constitute one of the great wildlife spectacles in the wild kingdom as a million migrants move through the Tanzanian Serengeti into the Masai Mara of Kenya in search of grazing grasslands. As they migrate, they drop calves while on the move, and attract a host of carnivore predators that stalk them.

Age Doesn't Matter

By Hal Banasch

Our flight from Calgary via Amsterdam to Johannesburg arrived at OR Tambo Airport close to midnight, and we were transported to Afton Safari Lodge for our first-class overnight stay. With Richard Lendrum’s assistance we were able to book the 10-day safari in September 2023 with Eland Safaris. When I sent Alex Thomson our personal information, he said that we would be the oldest clients that they had ever had at their lodge, and they did a great job looking after all our needs and providing us with an adventurous trip.

Bowhunting Africa

By McKenzie Sims

I love bow hunting, but must admit I am no expert. Far from it. I get extremely excited when I close in on animals and because of that; I have even lost a couple of animals in the process. I am not proud of it, but if anyone tells you they have never lost an animal, they probably haven’t hunted enough. I do practice and work hard at trying to better my shooting abilities, but when it comes down to drawing back, it’s like I black out and lose all control of my senses. If that ever happens, I think I should stop hunting!

I have traveled to Africa with my bow on three occasions, though have only been on two bow safaris, once to the Limpopo Province in South Africa and the other in the Northern Cape.

One for the Road

By Terry Wieland

In 1994, when I was holed up on a remote farm in the (then) Orange Free State, learning one last time that I am not a novelist, I found myself longing for something to read other than my well-worn copy of Hemingway’s short stories and a stack of ancient Reader’s Digests left over from the previous occupant.

On a trip into Newcastle, I went into a book store, browsed the shelves, and enquired of the pony-tailed young man behind the counter if he had anything by Stuart Cloete.  He looked at me blankly.  Stuart who?  Figuring I’d mispronounced the name, I wrote it down.  He stared at it, shrugged, and said he’d never heard of him.  And that was that.

Who are the African Dawn Outfitters?

The African Dawn Program is about promoting hunting in Africa, not just through what we publish, but with the outfitters’ cooperation in this program… and it is for your peace of mind.

International travel consumes two precious commodities – personal time and money. And when you are a hunter, things can get tricky when there are further considerations like rules, regulations, details and differences between each country and their species. It is important to have a good outfitter, and whether it is your next hunting safari, or your first one, there are many outfitters to choose from. In fact, there are over 500, so how do you find a reliable one, the one that is right for you?

To help you, we decided to promote and work with approximately 10% of this continent-wide group of outfitters. We have listed a limited number of an esteemed group of established and reputable African outfitters and they can be found in this Catalogue. To familiarize yourself with this list, we also offer monthly publications, and monthly trophy gallery posts (Trophies Fresh from the Veld). To ensure you receive these updates, sign up www.africanhuntinggazette.com.

If you are an agent looking for an outfitter to represent, you’ll be safe contacting one of these outfitters.

If you are researching for your next safari, be sure to contact any one of listed outfitters directly. It will support them and save you money by booking with them. Please tell them that it was by them being an African Dawn Member that contributed to the decision.

Our website www.africanhuntinggazette.com has a detailed overview of them all, and you know where to contact me if you need to know anything more.

For now, just enjoy the read.
