On this day in 1992, the Australian Grand Prix was held in Adelaide. It was the sixteenth and final race of the ’92 season which had seen Nigel Mansell win the title for Williams and then announce his move to IndyCars for ’93.
The 81-lap race was won by Gerhard Berger in a McLaren Honda by 0.7 seconds from Michael Schumacher’s Benetton Ford with Schumacher's teammate, Martin Brundle, third.
Mansell, staring from pole, led until he clashed with Ayrton Senna’s McLaren. Both were unable to continue.
The Australian GP represented McLaren's final race using Honda engines until 2015. Honda ceased its full factory involvement in the sport following this race, although the Mugen arm of the company continued.
The race was also the last F1 GP for Jan Lammers, Stefano Modena, Mauricio Gugelmin and Olivier Grouillard.
It also proved to be the last for the March team.
