The month of long nights

Dear Property Owner

June is a month of winter solstice, long cold evenings – and then boof – just like that the days are going to start getting longer.

This industry is turning.

Obviously, there are headwinds – but that will never change.

Our job at GHASA is to help you. Help you find new, better suppliers or just support the existing suppliers we have on board. Suppliers that will, in a small way, perhaps help your operation.

For now, this is just a time to keep appreciating what the winds of change have blown our way. Looking back, who would have thought we would ever come out that ghastly time.

So, like moving from the drinks table on a marathon – let’s keep jogging forward.

That is, ladies and gents, our only option – and the road it now flat or actually down hill.

Do you need some help at your guesthouse?

B&B Sitter

I run my parents’ guesthouse (Pennylane Guest House in Ermelo) for them on a regular basis when they visit family in Namibia. I also work remotely for other guesthouses – running their online bookings (via NightsBridge & the various booking sites like Booking.com etc). My remote services include the processing of bookings, quotes, all guest correspondence, invoicing, and payments. I also manage various social media accounts, and website development.

Currently I also assist my folks with guest’s meals (English breakfasts/take-away packs for lunches/plated meals for dinner).

Tony Futter – ex director of Netcare Hospital Group – retired from “corporate life” at the beginning of Covid – qualified cost accountant with a passion for people.

Marieka Futter – ex registered nurse and owner of a coffee shop and more recently running guest houses.

We have been taking care of guest houses for over seven years at The Beach House in Hout Bay and more recently Applegarth Bed & Breakfast here in Cape Town since July 2021. The guest house has been sold with effect from the end of July which means that our tenure has unfortunately come to an end. We have thoroughly enjoyed our year here even after taking over during level 4 of the covid pandemic! My relationship with the specialists and management at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital was the reason why we took the leap of faith as we knew that even during those trying times, the hospital would need guest houses for their staff, patients and their families. Our relationship remains strong.

We would love to continue doing what we have started at another guest house anywhere in South Africa – we are able to travel!

We understand that the success of running any business is to ensure your customers are well looked after. We have spent virtually all our lives in customer service driven businesses and continued with that philosophy during our tenure here at Applegarth – our guest ratings remain high so I do believe we have taken great care of them. We are actively involved in the daily operations – we both get involved in creating breakfasts that delight our guests, then Marieka looks after housekeeping and I take care of the bookings, admin and the finance side of the business.

We would be happy to lease your guest house for between one to five years where we pay you a monthly rent and manage the guest house at our own risk. Or we could merely manage your guest house for a monthly salary/retainer.

So if you are thinking of retiring but want to hold onto your property then we would love to chat to you.

Takatso

Takatso is a purpose driven start-up providing access to clean, affordable and safe drinking water. The solution is an all-in-one-unit, fully autonomous and self-sustainable. It is provided as an out-the-box, plug-and-play system powered by renewable energies to offer a response to water scarcity.

Takatso implemented its first autonomous and self-sustainable water purification system in a ranger camp near Phalaborwa at the Kruger National Park by the end of November 2021. This project is the outcome of a collaboration between SANParks and Takatso under a Proof of Concept Agreement for the duration of one year. We are proud to highlight that the project is now fully commissioned. The purification plant produces 500 litres per hour of safe drinkable water in order to meet the ranger camp water requirements. The plant extracts water from the Groot Letaba River which is purified before being made accessible for consumption. The solution fits into a container and has been implemented next to the ranger camp where it runs completely off grid thanks to the installation of a renewable energy power plant (solar panels).
