Get better CPK and support local

Better heat dissipation to enhance re-treadability. Improved uniformity of tread wear as a result of enhanced ground contact pressure distribution. Improved cost per kilometre (CPK). Just a few of the key features of the Dunlop SP835A Drive truck tyre.

“We are extremely proud of this addition to our truck and bus radial tyre range,” says Lubin Ozoux, CEO: Sumitomo Rubber South Africa (Pty) Ltd (SRSA), manufacturer of Dunlop tyres for the African continent. “Our in-house field application tests on 315/80R22.5 showed an up to 18% improvement on mileage and the best performance in the Drive application versus 31 competitors and 19 Dunlop tyres in three different fleets.”

The SP835A was locally researched and is produced at the world-class SRSA Truck and Bus Radial manufacturing plant in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal, heralding in a new era with Dunlop now able to supply a full set of locally produced tyres for all positions – from Steer, to Drive and Trailer.

A premium Drive tyre, developed for high mileage in long-haul highway applications, the SP835A has been extensively tested for South African and African road conditions and is available in 315/80R22.5 and 295/80R22.5. The reinforced bead results in even wear performance, while the optimised breakers angle provides better distribution of ground contact pressure, improving the uniformity of tread wear.

Low rolling resistance due to DECTES* technology reduces fuel consumption, lug grooves with different angles minimise stone retention while maintaining block stiffness, and tie-bars on the shoulder blocks reduce Heel & Toe wear.

An all-round game-changer tyre, the tread pattern on the SP835A shows less partial abrasion during block movement for even wear and higher mileage, while the cut-resistant compound used in manufacturing the SP835A exhibits performance improvement in wear, cut/chipping and stone trapping.

Trevor Blokdyk – SA’s forgotten F1 driver
By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

Almost 57 years ago, on 19 September 1964, Trevor Blokdyk won a South African F1 Drivers Championship race at the Killarney circuit in Cape Town driving a Cooper T59 powered by a Lotus Ford twin-cam engine.

South African-born Blokdyk was a former speedway rider who successfully switched to four wheels, pursuing a career in Europe driving Formula Junior and F3 cars.

Soon a front-runner, he unfortunately suffered a serious crash at the Albi circuit in France.

Trevor dovetailed his European programme with a number of SA F1 events including the 1963 SA GP in East London – his only world championship race – where he finished a creditable twelfth in an aging Cooper Maserati.

In 1964 he won twice (at Killarney and Roy Hesketh in Pietermaritzburg) and found himself in contention for the championship title – eventually won by John Love.

Blokdyk continued to race in Europe into the late 1960s, before returning home to SA where he became a farmer. He passed away in 1995 following a heart attack aged just 59.
