Win Suunto 7 smartwatch (starts Mon).

PHOTO OF THE WEEK
One of our favourite Trail Trophies shared with us on Monday was the Table Mountain Trailers trip to Cape Point Nature Reserve. Liz Brash took this photo as her run companions approached their chilly swim spot. They ran the 5.5km Kanonkop loop, named after the cannon located at its peak. “It was a stunning day with dramatic low cloud. Our small group enjoyed a beautiful run with a bonus spotting of bontebok and eland.” View all the contributions or add your own on Monday's Facebook post.

Her photo may appear in a future TRAIL issue – and so could yours. So share your weekend #TrailTrophies on Facebook and Twitter. Use that hashtag and #trailmagpix on Instagram and Twitter. Or email us. Be sure to tell us a bit about your run for the caption. (Please note: event photographer images aren't printed.)

Prefer words? Write a letter instead. Your opinions, life-changing experiences, happy and sad memories, and reflections on our sport are waiting to be shared with the community. If your letter is published, you'll receive a pair of run-specific Feetures socks.

1. FROM THE EDITORS

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a good week despite the negative energy around coronavirus. This too shall pass.

So sit back and immerse yourself in trail running happy thoughts. Life goes on, and the chance is in your favour that you'll be trail running long after coronavirus has come and gone. Or, more likely, it will have become part of the host of human pathogens that remind us that we're just another link in the web of life on Earth. It's too early to tell, so there's little use worrying about it. Smile, be happy.

Mag update. We're out of print. TRAIL issue 35 goes on sale from 23 March, so look for it in 600+ stores nationwide.

It's an issue we're excited to share. We've sourced the latest insights into a wide range of topics that will make your life richer and more fulfilling if you implement them.

And the cover runner is... Eric Ngubane! Photo by Gareth Hubbard, a former Capetonian now living on the KZN South Coast.

Our current issue 34 is available until Sunday in stores it hasn't sold out from. If you haven't yet, get a copy and absorb the collective wisdom of the expert writers and visual artists who created it.

Our recent news:

Africa's Wildest Ultra. I attended my fifth Addo Elephant Trail Run two weekends ago. I love this race just north of Port Elizabeth. View our Facebook event album. This year was "the toughest ever" – the words of race director Sian O'Keeffe. He wasn't only talking from a runner perspective: Africa's Wildest Ultra was WILD from his view too: the unprecedented high temperatures forced a three hour halt to the race, there was a rolled vehicle and trailer (no serious injuries to the five occupants), and a heavy tree branch narrowly missed finish crew and runners. These were JUST SOME of the challenges his team had to contend with. He wasn't the only one. Ryan from Rebel Media Guys had a brief that included running the 44km. His misadventure makes for an amusing read. You know you need a laugh, so go ahead!

We hope you are inspired by this ninth newsletter of 2020. Happy trails!

Deon Braun, TRAIL founder

4. CURRENT ISSUE

The Year Bloukrans Kicked Butt

The 11th annual Otter African Trail Run was another epic. The infamous Bloukrans River crossing delivered some unforgettable memories. Read the article on page 16 of TRAIL 34.

5. CALENDAR

Calendar curator Heloise will continue to update our web calendar during these coronavirus weeks. Please use it to check the website and social media of events you are keen on. Then you can find out if the event has been postponed to a later date (like Giant's Cup Trail and Klipspringer Challenge have been), or rolled over to 2021 like Ultra-Trail Drakensberg.

Please be supportive of event organisers, as their livelihood is at stake. For larger events especially, many months of planning and investment is now lost.

Since there will be few, if any, events to report on in our next issue 36 (on sale 22 June), we will be dedicating that space to your FKTs and adventures. Please email Heloise details of your independent solo adventures. You can send images once she's confirmed she's keen to feature your story. You could be in our next issue. Wouldn't that be cool?!

Further ahead. The coronavirus is expected to do its rounds for several weeks, and likely months. Its anyone's guess how many events later this year will be affected. You can view some of the promoted events later this year, if you scroll beyond the current list of races.

Even further? Use the longer-range calendar in our print mag to highlight your goal runs.
