Dominant win for Love at Roy Hesketh

By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

John Love won the Natal Winter Trophy race at the Roy Hesketh circuit in Natal on this day in 1966.

Driving his “Tasman” Cooper T79 powered by a 2.7-litre Climax engine, Love dominated and took top honours in the two-heat, 66-lap race ahead of fellow-Rhodesian Sam Tingle (LDS Mk3B Climax) and Jackie Pretorius (Lotus 21 Climax).

Tony Jefferies in the ex-Love Cooper T55 was fourth ahead of Doug Serrurier (LDS Climax) and Clive Pusey in his Lotus Climax.

In 1966 Love and his Cooper would be the most dominant combination in the SA Drivers’ Championship which, with six more victories in the season, he would clinch ahead of Tingle and Jefferies.

Love’s Cooper T79 (pictured) is today acknowledged as one of the first “McLaren” cars as it was designed by Bruce himself and built by his mechanic Wally Willmot. It is said to have been based, to a large extent, on the 1964 F1 Cooper T73. This iconic racer helped Love win three of his six SA championship titles; in 1965, ’66 and ’67.
