...like a moonrise view from Nel's Cave at 2000m above sea level (see above). It is all about perspective. What you cannot see from the above is the sheer drop below the peak, or the colours as the night progress. Below is the same peak from various angles within the cave. We decided to renamed it Cinnamon Roll Peak.

Wild Adventures along the West Coast

Wild camping is not a very popular term in South Africa. We are more used to the multitude of organised campsites across the country. Few people know about the wild camping that is available along the West Coast. The saying goes "The West Coast is the Best Coast."

Fact 1 - It is remote. The closest town is 70km away. If you are looking for remote, this is it.

Fact 2 - There is nothing. Not even shade. Everything you need, you need to take along with you. Food, water, toilet, shower, shade. Everything. (And again when you leave.)

Fact 3 - No booking required. Yes, you can go when you want and leave when you want. Campsites (if that is the right term) are available on a first come, first serve basis.
* Please note: Further north towards Groenrivier there are official campsites so make sure you are on the right spot.

If the above appeals to you, you have just found heaven.

How to get there - Follow the N7 to Klawer and turn off toward Vredendal and Lutzville. Lutzville is the last major town so make sure you have enough fuel and water.

From Lutzville, follow the R363 toward Brand se Baai and turn off the tarred road before the Namakwa Sands mine. Follow the road to the salt pan and turn left at the T-junction toward the ocean.
GPS location: 31°14'29.3"S 17°51'00.1"E

A 4x4 is not a must have, but for ease of mind, a 4x4 would be the best. The sand is thick in some places so if you are not in a 4x4, make sure you check the route down to the coast before you use it.
