BUZZ QUARTER 1

Welcome to 2022!

We trust that you all had an awesome December and slowly but surely are getting back into the momentum of the new year.

In typical Bordeauxian style, a warm welcome to all our new residents. We have been busy with the following:

  • Reinstatements

  • Tarring of potholes

  • Clearing of alien species

The fence along Garden Road will be repaired during February as new panels needed to be ordered. Vumacam contracts have been drawn-up and are being reviewed by various stakeholders.

Have an awesome first quarter to the year! Remember to be thoughtful and considerate in all that you do!

We're going social

Going forward the Committee has decided that the Buzz newsletter will be sent out every quarter.

Please follow us on FaceBook https://www.facebook.com/bordeauxsouth/ for all the updates, events happening in and around our suburb, and announcements.

WHAT'S THE BUZZ...

Out Fixing Potholes

The latest downpours have left our suburb's roads a little worse for wear, but thanks to the team from Willows that has helped us to fix the majority of the potholes.

Upcycling for fun!

BSRA Committee members have been saving-up old tyres and managed to find some bright paint to reinvigorate the kids play area at the park! New seating has also been installed.

Our Garden Suburb

In other news, these small signs are being redone.

If residents find them with stickers coming off etc, please let us know at [email protected]

Thanks to the Gardening Team

A big thanks to the Gardening Team who have removed the broken trees around Garden Rd.

The work revealed a few spots where the fences are broken, which are to be fixed in Feburary, once the panels have been made up.

Spruit Update

UTM have done a very thorough inspection of sector one and found no signs at all of recent activity other than the churches at the weir. No camps, people, bedding or any other foreign objects were found.

All quiet in sectors 2, 3 5 and 6. A few suspicious individuals have been observed in sector four (servitude between Willowild and Hurlingham) and UTM have increased patrols there.

Birdlife and wildlife is thriving and there are often fresh otter spoor, mongooses and a lot of fish in the river (especially cat fish!).

Welcome New Residents!

  • Bruce and Michele (Huguenot Avenue)

  • Eugene and Hennie (Louis Avenue)

  • Dorion and Shelly (Francois Avenue)

  • Mbasa Fihlani (Hilma Avenue)

  • McGee Gede (Louis Avenue)

A warm welcome to everyone new to the suburb. Please feel free to reach out if there's anything you need.

SUBURB ISSUES REPORT

During the last quarter, residents reported a number of faults which were logged and escalated by the BSRA team.

The following faults are outstanding:

  • 37 lights out in the suburb since November - City Power are awaiting stock of globes

  • 20 water burst reinstatements on the list - JRA continues to be short staffed

  • 39 open electricity boxes – NB It has been suggested by Council that these boxes should remain open to the outside elements rather than be locked as City Power are experiencing problems with sourcing the electronic key and should the resident experience a power problem, it could take days for the fault to be rectified.

SECURITY & CRIME REPORT

In 2021 total we had 16 reported incidents:

  • 1 armed robbery – no injuries reported

  • 1 theft out of a parked vehicle

  • 3 break-ins

  • 5 attempted break-ins – often with nothing stolen due to quick action from security companies or neighbours

  • 6 thefts, some of these include lights stolen off external walls.

In reviewing reported crime statistics in our suburb for last year, it shows that with our great partnerships we have managed to keep our incidents fairly low, especially when compared with reported incidents in our neighbouring suburbs.
Since the introduction of the two dedicated vehicles and the automated booms in the suburb the crime has decreased as displayed below.

Currently we have three main security companies patrolling our suburb. There are two dedicated vehicles provided by Special Ops 99 with Fidelity/ADT and Beagle patrolling on an ad hoc basis. In this past month, we have also secured a third ad hoc vehicle from  Special Ops 99 to further assist with patrols.  This means that at any given time we may have five security vehicles driving around.

In addition, resources for police stations are allocated based on case loads. By reporting all crime incidents we can help our local police station justify required resources.

To help our suburb reduce our crime rate even further, here are safety tips provided by SAPS:

  • Know your emergency numbers and contact numbers for neighbours – save these to your phone

  • Change remotes of gates and garages and all keys for external doors when you move into new premises

  • Also change all remotes and keys after losing them or having them stolen

  • Consider also changing remotes and keys when you employ new staff

  • Verify background information of any new staff (full names, ID / passport numbers, address, previous work references, next of kin)

  • You can also obtain security clearances for new staff – contact your nearest police station for assistance

  • When away for extended periods of time, ask your neighbours / friends to keep an eye on your property and to remove any mail / newspapers

  • Use lighting to your advantage – lights on outside when it is dark inside will enable you to see what is going on without being observed with the opposite being true (lights on inside with outside lights off put you at a disadvantage)

  • If strangers / strange vehicles loiter outside your home, contact your security company and request the “meet and greet” service

  • If you see these strangers in front of your property when coming home, drive past your home and return later

  • Do not leave tools and ladders lying around in your yard

  • Confirm the identity of any visitors, even if you are expecting them – do not allow access to the property until you know who is waiting outside

  • When 10 minutes or less from your property, check to see whether you are being followed – call your security company and request “meet and greet” if you are unsure or uneasy

  • Stop just inside your gate when entering your premises and wait for the gate to close, before opening your garage or parking

  • Keep a fully charged torch next to your bed at night and memorise the location of all fixed panic buttons

  • Limit outsider access to private information such as your movements and contents in your home

  • If near an ongoing or recent construction project, use home security more frequently and break patterns of your travels to and from home as much as possible (time, duration and frequency)

  • Take extra precautions if you operate a business from home, particularly if cash is on hand: consider concealed cash safes, improved lighting, security gates at entrances and vary time for going to the bank to deposit cash.

Please take extra precaution

Residents, please note that extra caution is needed as loadshedding starts up again. With no curfew in place there are also more opportunities for crime incidents.

If you see suspicious behaviour please use your panic buttons for quick response. For Special Ops clients, push the panic button twice to activate it. SAPS has also requested that all incidents are reported to the nearest police station. This helps to detect trends for effective crime prevention and to deploy appropriate resources.

Check your property perimeters for any weak spots and make sure your gates cannot be lifted off rails. This may just require a small bar to be welded across the top pole to prevent any lifting. Check with your security company.

Beware of criminals posing as Stats SA fieldworkers during nationwide census

Statistics South Africa is set to conduct a nationwide population and housing census from February 3 to 28, 2022.

To ensure that you do not fall victim to criminals posing as Stats SA fieldworkers, please take note of the following:

  • All Stats SA fieldworkers have been issued with census 2022-branded bib, peak cap, mask and bag.

  • Fieldworkers have a census-branded ID card printed with the Stats SA logo with their photo, name, unique number and the district they have been assigned to work in.

  • Households can make use of the online Fieldworker Verification System, which can be accessed here: http://statssa.gov.za/Fieldworkerverification/home.php.

  • Households can search by name, surname or verification number.

  • The fieldworker’s photo, full name and surname and the district they have been assigned to work in are display.

Households can contact the call centre on 0800 110 248, or the provincial census contact person listed here http://census.statssa.gov.za/#myContacts to verify the legitimacy of the person knocking at their door.

CPF News

At this month’s Community Police Forum (CPF) EXCO meeting it was confirmed that residents need to open cases for any crime affecting them at the nearest police station. However, this is only for cases related to SAPS responsibilities.

Infringements to bylaws should be reported to JMPD – the agency responsible for enforcing the city rules and regulations. For example, illegal occupation of vacant properties, drinking in city parks and creating a disturbance on city property, illegal dumping and air pollution. For a full list visit Joburg.org.za and click on By-Laws.

Nuisance type disturbances such as loud music after 10 pm, illegal use of fireworks, tampering with substations and other dangerous behaviour can also be reported.

These infringements should be reported to the Deputy Director on WhatsApp 0825512897. The complaints are investigated and followed-up by senior management.

This will help SAPS to focus on crime and allocate resources appropriately.

Old Parks Sports Club

Sign up for an Old Parks membership here.

We encourage all residents to become a member of Old Parks Sport Club as it has many benefits for our community. It is very family orientated and covers a variety of sports for the enthusiasts, including a very well-known running team who participate in the many short and longer marathons throughout the year.

Old Parks also sports a bar with a discount for members and Tipu Café, for a lovely meal overlooking the fields.

OTHER MATTERS

BSRA Communications Policy

Participation in BSRA social media and platforms (e.g. WhatsApp groups) is subject to adherence to the BSRA Communications Policy, which can be found on the BSRA website.

Please familiarise yourself with this Communications Policy, (including the purposes of the different WhatsApp groups and the forwarding of news and other posts) to avoid warnings and removal from the groups.

BSRA WhatsApp Group

The BSRA loves connecting residents through the Whatsapp Chat group, however it has recently reached capacity and we can no longer add new residents to the group.

We are kindly asking residents to nominate one member per household to be on the Chat group, and that anyone additional remove themselves. We understand this might be disappointing for some folks, but ultimately, we want all new residents to enjoy the same benefits as we do.

We will give duplicate residents until next Thursday to remove themselves, failing which the BSRA will remove duplicates.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance in this matter.

Water Restrictions

Water restrictions are still in full force and no watering of any kind is allowed from 6am - 6pm daily and that includes sprinklers, car washing and any other form of water wastage.

It is worth noting that the Municipality has advised the amount of water consumption per household and excess usage could lead to penalties!
