Vegan: Breaking down plant-based diets

Plant-based’, ‘vegan’ and ‘vegetarian’ are popular terms that are often used interchangeably. However, are they actually referring to the same thing? The short answer is no. ‘Plant-based diets’ – also sometimes referred to as ‘plant-forward’ diets – is the umbrella term for diet patterns that focus on foods primarily from plants. This includes food groups such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans. There are several variations of diets within the plant-based category, some even including animal products.

The year 2021 was one of transition, and of coming to grips with the practical implications of the ‘new normal’ that COVID-19 has brought about. The overall impact of the outbreak and of the resulting emergency measures were still to be seen in lingering supply-chain logistics issues, travel bans, and political conflicts. However, individuals and businesses started to shape their futures again, rather than just grinding through the present. Although there is no returning to normal after the pandemic – not yet, anyway – there is definitely a path forwards. We would like to reflect on some of the noteworthy events of 2021 that occurred in the field of Allergen Management, both globally and locally.
