1. ED'S HELLO

Those Cape mountains...

Hey, it's Heloise.

On this, the 113th day of January*, let's reflect on the awesome memories we created before getting back into the swing of (work) things.

My best January 2020 memories were made on a short trip to Cape Town, staying with friends and exploring new trails. Would you believe – at 31 years old – that I ascended Table Mountain for the first time? My excuse is that I live in Durban, and if I want a mountain it's easier for me to get to the Drakensberg.

I'm grateful to Fareed Behardien of Leave The Couch for guiding me up India Venster and down Platteklip, taking lots of photos along the way. Seeing Lion's Head peek above the clouds on my way up, and spotting the Himalayan tahrs on the way down, were highlights.

I took walks through Kirstenbosch and through Newlands Forest with non-running friends. These had the benefit of slowing down and taking in the beauty without pressure. Because of the depictions of Cape trails in the media, I didn't expect to feel so safe carrying around my DSLR with a single companion.

Near the end of my stay, another TRAIL contributor, Jaco Roux of Extreme Jogging, showed me the playground in his backyard: Jonkershoek. I was in awe of the landscape, the inexplicable sea sand, the mini forests and waterfalls tucked into the mountains, and the wildflowers and grasses.

Cape mountains are different from the Drakensberg beyond the sea sand (what's up with that?) and flora. The most notable difference is the number of people enjoying the trails, no matter how early, hot, technical, or exposed. I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, it's incredible to have so many people appreciating nature. On the other, I really enjoy being able to disappear into the bush and feel a sense of privacy and isolation.

Happy trails, whether you share them or not!

Next issue 35

We are working on issue 35 and excited about it! Mail us your content.

Latest issue 34.

Have you read the Jan/Feb/Mar 2020 issue 34 yet? We think it's our best yet. Get it at over 600 outlets nationwide. Port Elizabeth's Annalise Scholtz is the cover athlete. We were impressed by her life as much as her achievements at winning five ultra trails, including two 100 milers, last year. Her story is about losing her way, finding it, and then facing the biggest challenge of her life... I think you'll be inspired by this story.

I hope you enjoy this second Trail Mail of 2020.

Happy trails!

Heloise Hunter

Zimbabwean doctor (based in Namibia) Keletso Nyathi (above) also ran the 100km race, finishing in 21h47min. It was a tough day out, with 395 of the 1859 starters not completing the race.

Today we jump, tomorrow we fly

Fifth-year medical student Luthando Siboya takes flight in Steiltes Nature Reserve, Mbombela (Nelspruit). He and photographer William, a second-year engineering student, were exploring the area after representing Stellenbosch at the University Sport South Africa Cross-Country Championships in September.

“The trail was filled with obstacles, dense vegetation, and mountainous terrain. After the effort to the top, we were rewarded with a spectacular view.”
