AFTON SAFARI LODGE – In the CAPE

Since taking over running Afton, seven and a half years ago, I have invested time, money and a lot of love making Afton as one guest kindly called it, “a safari sanctuary.” It’s where I live, it houses so much of what I am passionate about and is really my small way of helping incoming guests to Africa to become excited about what this continent offers. From my crazy love of rocks, driftwood, seed pods, aloes to, of course, the trophies and the trophy room. I am on a bit of a mission, but I do love the place.

Afton seems to be popular based on the number of repeat visitors and the feedback. Chatting to visitors that have been here 15-plus times – it is extraordinary.

Having had the dream for many years, I am thrilled to announce what is now a reality… Afton has a Cape Town base. Yes, just a short ride from the airport, in a convenient suburb and the ideal location to explore the Western Cape.  We will be doing all the same – Meet and Greet, Gun Permits, and the same Afton hospitality, but now from the Cape. You’re in for a treat, and if you have never been to Cape Town – here is my most sincere advice.

Bring your spouse, your kids, yourself – and enjoy what in my humble opinion is the greatest city in the world.

In a month starting with such good news – it really is so great to share this bit of positive news from African hunting HQ. And from our side – it is a big thank you to all who have popped in - be it for a quick meal or for a couple of nights.

Thank you.

Have a great month.

Best wishes,
Richard Lendrum

On Target at 85

By Ron Machado

When I stepped out of my room this morning, it was cold and dark.  I grabbed a sweater near the door and went to meet my PH and his tracker.  They were waiting near our hunting truck and within a few minutes, we were on our way.

The Unforgettable Bushveld

By Shiri Castellan

An experience that forever cemented my love for hunting. “I’ve been hunting for over twenty-five years and the biggest misconception people have is thinking that hunters are just killers. Whereas, in truth, every hunter I know has the greatest respect and love for animals. We are nature lovers,” Ashlie* said. The year was 2000; I was twelve years old, female, and sharing my first hunting experience with my father. An anomaly of sorts. I walked closely behind him and followed his instructions as I placed my feet directly in his footsteps. I avsided making any sudden movements, kept my voice low, and talk to a minimum.

A Leopard For Günter

By Sidney Lovell-Parker

The year was 2004, and I was finalizing the analysis for a potential offshore oil discovery between Portugal and Spain for the Italian company I worked for when my secretary interrupted saying that my friend Mike (Marco Antônio Moura de Castro) had already called three times wanting to speak to me. I returned the call curious and wondering what could be so urgent. Mike answered my call promptly, greeting me with the hearty laugh he had.
“Mr. Parker” and another laugh. I knew that the call was not to give me anything and then came the request, “I need a big favor from you………”

Bow, Arrow and a Bosbok

By Frank Berbuir

It is end of August and I am lucky to be back again in South Africa to hunt with bow and arrow. We are on a nice farm, managed by a lovely couple, on the border of the North West Province close to the Limpopo Province.

One For The Road
By Terry Wieland

It’s been a while since I wrote anything about snakes and, to be honest, I haven’t missed it.  Writing about snakes requires thinking about snakes and not being a snake guy, my mind prefers to dwell upon such burning questions as “Is a Mauser 98 better than a pre-64?” and “Rigby double, or Westley Richards?”  Hmmm.

Who are the African Dawn Outfitters?

The African Dawn Program is about promoting hunting in Africa, not just through what we publish, but with the outfitters’ cooperation in this program… and it is for your peace of mind.

International travel consumes two precious commodities – personal time and money. And when you are a hunter, things can get tricky when there are further considerations like rules, regulations, details and differences between each country and their species. It is important to have a good outfitter, and whether it is your next hunting safari, or your first one, there are many outfitters to choose from. In fact, there are over 500, so how do you find a reliable one, the one that is right for you?

To help you, we decided to promote and work with approximately 10% of this continent-wide group of outfitters. We have listed a limited number of an esteemed group of established and reputable African outfitters and they can be found in this Catalogue. To familiarize yourself with this list, we also offer monthly publications, and monthly trophy gallery posts (Trophies Fresh from the Veld). To ensure you receive these updates, sign up www.africanhuntinggazette.com.

If you are an agent looking for an outfitter to represent, you’ll be safe contacting one of these outfitters.

If you are researching for your next safari, be sure to contact any one of listed outfitters directly. It will support them and save you money by booking with them. Please tell them that it was by them being an African Dawn Member that contributed to the decision.

Our website www.africanhuntinggazette.com has a detailed overview of them all, and you know where to contact me if you need to know anything more.

For now, just enjoy the read.
