Suspension guru - Syd Van Der Vyver

By Graham Duxbury @TheRealDux

On this day in 1961, reigning South African champion Syd van der Vyver won the Border 100 race at the Prince George circuit in East London in his Lotus 18 Alfa Romeo. He was followed home by Bob van Niekerk in another Lotus 18, this time Ford powered.

Fanie Viljoen in a Cooper T45 Climax was third, with John Hanning (Austin Jaguar), Dawie Gous (Porsche 550) and Neville Austin (Jaguar D-Type) rounding out the top six finishers.

Dave Wright was fastest in qualifying in his Cooper T43 Climax but retired with a blown engine after 11 laps of the 35-lap race.

Van der Vyver, who would go on to win his second SA championship in ’61, was well respected internationally. There is a story of how the superior handling of his cars had impressed no less a driver than Stirling Moss who asked Syd to come to the UK to work on the Rob Walker-entered Lotus 18 that he (Moss) drove.

Syd’s efforts may well have played a role in a number of Moss’ victories. Unfortunately, Syd eventually fell out with Moss’ mechanic Alf Francis and the partnership ended abruptly.
